Taos Mountain Outfitters Paddling Gear Boating in Taos
The Rio Grande
The high desert of Northern New Mexico is cut by the Rio Grande, which travels from its headwaters in Southern Colorado through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Taos is home to the Rio Grande Gorge, a deep box canyon with scenic rapids ranging from class I through V. From easy play boating to white-knuckle hair boating, Taos has something for everyone.

Playboating The sections of the Rio Grande near Taos are broken into four sections: The Upper Box, Middle Box, Lower Box and Lower Gorge. When winter snow and spring rain are plentiful, five steep creeks thunder out of Sangre De Cristos to help feed the Rio Grande. CreekingThe Santa Cruz, Red River, Rio Pueblo, Rio Hondo and the Rio Embudo all offer the expert boater class V adventures. For detailed descriptions of all of the runs mentioned above, please consult Colorado Rivers and Creeks by Gordon Banks and Dave Eckardt or see their website at www.kayakingcolorado.com.
