Taos is home to world-class rock climbing. While Taos climbers tend to be a bit secretive to protect their local crags, we like to joke that if Taos were located on the Front Range of Colorado, it would have been "climbed-out" years ago. Instead, you will find scenic, well developed climbing without the crowds that plague many climbing areas.
Taos is amazing in that we have every kind of climbing you can imagine, and all just a short drive away. From bolted sport climbing routes on steep basalt to long classic routes in the mountains, Taos has it all. Our favorite areas include Tres Piedras, Dead Cholla Wall, Questa Dome and White Rock. For directions and route descriptions to each of these areas, check out Rock Climbing New Mexico and Texas by Dennis R. Jackson.
Taos is blessed with over three hundred days of sunshine each year. Given the right aspect and the intensity of the Northern New Mexican sun, it is possible to climb twelve months a year in Taos. Rock Climbers come from all over the Rockies to warm up during the winter months and enjoy the Taos crags. With thirteen thousand foot mountains in our backyard, winter months bring snow and ice to the jagged mountain peaks surrounding Taos. The right combination of precipitation and cold nights often treats Taos climbers to steep ice routes and mixed winter mountaineering. Please check this website for current conditions.
If you are planning a trip to Taos please feel free to contact us for a list of recommended routes.
